We had a lot of fun, with Ala, Breg, Tin, Pops, Shus, Saed and myself in attendance!

The inauguration went well, I inaugurated Pops and Saed. Thankfully no one was maimed in the process. After thanking outgoing and incoming officers, we started our EagleStock!

Our first event was a madlib with a LoTR theme, here’s a copy how that went…

[Kinship] Ferniuk: Our first event is a word game
[Kinship] Ferniuk: I have taken an excerpt from the Lord of the Rings Fellowship of the Ring
[Kinship] Ferniuk: and we will replace some of the words.
[Kinship] Ferniuk: Our passage is called “Friends in Good Times and Bad”
[Kinship] Ferniuk: THis is a little silly, but since we’re not in a fellowship, can we all stand in a line
[Kinship] Ferniuk: so that I can ask everyone equally?
      [Kinship] Ferniuk: Thanks :-)
      [To Kinship] yes
[Kinship] Ferniuk: Saed, may I have a common noun
      [Kinship] Saedhillian: dog
[Kinship] Ferniuk: Luri, a Verb please
      [To Kinship] singing
[Kinship] Ferniuk: Tin, a Verb please
      [Kinship] Tindalel: pouncing
[Kinship] Ferniuk: Shus, an adverb please
      [Kinship] Shustir: quickly
      [Kinship] Ferniuk: Pops, an adjective
      [Kinship] Snoto: pretty
      [Kinship] Ferniuk: alaron, another adjective
      [Kinship] Alarondir: scintillating
      [To Kinship] *claps*
[Kinship] Ferniuk: Alaron, a common nown
[Kinship] Saedhillian: you prepared in advance didin’t you?
      [Kinship] Alarondir: nope. :)
      [Kinship] Alarondir: stagecoach
[Kinship] Ferniuk: Pops, an exclamation, please
      [Kinship] Snoto: oh crud!
      [To Kinship] lol
      [Kinship] Snoto: lol
[Kinship] Ferniuk: Shus, a common noun please
      [Kinship] Shustir: puppy
[Kinship] Ferniuk: Tin, an exclamation, please
      [Kinship] Tindalel: Leaping purple trees!
[Kinship] Ferniuk: Luri, a common noun, plural
      [To Kinship] trolls
[Kinship] Ferniuk: Saed, a verb please
      [Kinship] Saedhillian: eat
      [Kinship] Ferniuk: and an adverb
      [Kinship] Saedhillian: loudly
[Kinship] Ferniuk: Luri, also an adverb
      [To Kinship] quickly
      [Kinship] Ferniuk: Tin, verb
      [Kinship] Tindalel: rocking
[Kinship] Ferniuk: Shus, common noun pl
      [Kinship] Shustir: elephant
      [Kinship] Ferniuk: Pops, a verb
      [Kinship] Snoto: walk
      [Kinship] Ferniuk: Alaron, a verb
      [Kinship] Alarondir: scampering
      [Kinship] Ferniuk: and a noun
      [Kinship] Alarondir: porcupine
[Kinship] Ferniuk: Pops, a common noun
      [Kinship] Snoto: she
[Kinship] Ferniuk: and Shus an adjective
      [Kinship] Shustir: beautiful
[Kinship] Ferniuk: ok, this will be good!
      [To Kinship] heh
[Kinship] Ferniuk: Friends in Good Times and Bad
      [Kinship] Tindalel: Uh oh…
[Kinship] Ferniuk: “Well!” said Frodo at last, sitting up and straightening his dog, as if he had made a decision. “I have got something to sing to you all. But I don’t know quite how to begin.”
[Kinship] Ferniuk: I think I could pounce on you, said Merry quietly, “by telling you some of it myself”.“What do you mean?” said Frodo, looking at him quickly.
[Kinship] Ferniuk: “just this, my dear pretty Frodo: you are scintillating, because you don’t know how to say good-bye. You meant to leave the Shire, of course.
[Kinship] Ferniuk: But the stagecoach has come on you sooner than you expected, and now you are making up your mind to go at once. And you don’t want to. We are very sorry for you.”
      [To Kinship] lol
[Kinship] Ferniuk: “Oh, Crud!” said Frodo. “I thought I had been both careful and clever. I don’t know what Gandalf would say. Is all the Shire discussing my puppy then?”
      [To Kinship] hehehe
[Kinship] Ferniuk: “Leaping purple trees!” said Merry. “Don’t worry about that! The secret won’t keep for long, of course; but at present it is, I think, only known to us trolls.
[Kinship] Ferniuk: To tell you the truth, I had been eating you rather closely ever since Bilbo left. I thought you would go after him sooner or later; indeed I expected you to go sooner, and lately we have been loudly anxious.
[Kinship] Ferniuk: We have been terrified that you might give us the slip, and go off quickly, all on your own like he did. Ever since this spring we have kept our eyes open, and done a good deal of rocking on our own account. You are not going to escape so easily!”
[Kinship] Ferniuk: “But I must go” said Frodo. “It cannot be helped, dear elephants, It is wretched for us all, but it is no use your walking to keep me. Since you have guessed so much, please help me and do not hinder me!”
[Kinship] Ferniuk: “You do not understand!” said Pippin. “You must go – and therefore we must, too. Merry and I are scampering with you.
[Kinship] Ferniuk: Sam is an excellent fellow, and would jump down a dragon’s porcupine to save you, if he did not trip over his own girl; but you will need more than one companion in your beautiful adventure.”And so they did.
      [Kinship] Ferniuk: The end

I think you’ll agree this was an excellent take on the night before Frodo’s epic adventure!

I took some happy snaps too!

      My Dearest HobbitsEagles!

I am standing for leader for another term.

While I think we achieved a lot in the last term (thanks to an excellent if small group of officers):
      – we ran 24 events!
      – had regular communication (newsletter)
      – gave everyone a unicorn warsteed

I feel that my work isn’t finished, there’s still lots to do.

Okay time for some real talk…

The kinship is losing its vitality. We’ve all but lost our old alliances. So we have to rely on one another to keep things going.

We have moved from a kinship whose common ground was Coursera, to being a lifeboat for those who have sadly seen their own kinship fold.

Some of our kinnies have had to seek regular events through alts on other kinships.

Regular events are a bit of a vicious circle, people want regular events which they don’t attend and then leave the kinship because there are no regular events. I should also add it ends up disappointing those who have organised the events and makes them less likely to run any in future.

I do not begrudge those who have sought more active kinships; we play LotRO as a form of escape and entertainment. Some of us enjoy the companionship, others enjoy mastering the mechanics of the game.

So, as your Leader. I now send red arrows to all of the kinnies. The Eagles need your aid. Help us to bring life into our kinship.

I’m sorry if I’ve laid it on thick, but the successive officers and leaders have seen this steady decline in our vitality. I’m sure you have all seen this too. Let’s turn it around!

      Your faithful servant,

      Luri

      Dear Kinnies,

We’ve only had one nomination, so I’ve extended the nomination period until the 25th.

If you can help, please do.

Do we think there will be another level cap increase in update 20 or 21 to mitigate the fear when we advance upon Mordor? Or possibly something else to imbue i.e. legendary pants?

      Luringdad for Leader

      Dear Eagles,

I’ve been with the kinship since its creation in 2013. I was there when we needed to form the first council to look after the wellbeing of the kinship following the Coursera class* that started it all.

It’s been my honour to serve on the council several times, but now I feel it’s time to lead our merry band through today’s choppier waters.

We now face a difficult time, something that challenges all kinships from time to time.

To give you some context of what the Eagles was like in its heyday: the kinship channel would be a hive of activity, if you got stuck you could be certain several kinnies would join you to help you complete your quest. I feel that we’ve lost that shine, that wonderful sense of community we once had.

      So what’s happened?

We grew apart. By that I mean without the Coursera class* to start people on the same level we end up playing at different rates. Combine this with several level cap increases and we no longer have a core of players looking for the same type of game (unless you’re 105).

We’ve tried catering to the more social players and to the endgame/raiding players. But we still haven’t found the sweet spot.

So how can we fix it?

First off there’s no quick fix. We’ve tried to ramp up recruitment and run more scheduled raids/instance events. We also formed what would become the TEB alliance to increase the number of reliable players online at any one time. These things haven’t proven to be a magic bullet. I don’t mean we shouldn’t continue with them, but we need to look at other possibilities.

I’ve thought of a number of things we could try that might help. For instance, we could hold “town hall” meetings to engage those who don’t use the forum. Streamline the workload of officers to avoid burn out. Work with incoming officers to find out what they think the kinship needs. We’ll try a number of tactics with the aim of generally invigorating the kinship.

      If you agree vote Luri!

      Eagles, it’s time to buff!

This Saturday I plan to hold an Ask Me Anything (AMA) on kin chat from 3PM Server Time. The other candidates are welcome to join me. If we start to flood the channel I’ll create a raid group.

Now’s your chance to grill me George Foreman style!

      Answering Mirveth’s question:

      > So, my question for the candidates is: what would be your strategy to recruit new people in the kin?

In addition to recruitment drives in Bree, Moria and Gondor.

I think running a few ad hoc events like Roving Threats, Treasure Caches and; Floid and Dewitt might help raise our profile.

So if there’s any kindly Cappys or Hunters who can help make this happen please get in touch with me!

      Answering Aglar’s questions:

      > 1. How would you like to see our kinship grow and change over the next year? What steps do you recommend to get us there?

I am taking a long view that it’s going to be tougher each year to recruit. The best we can do is to be there when people start playing in Bree. And also be around as they progress onto Moria and Gondor.

      > 2. What is one thing you personally would want to add, remove, or change in the code of conduct?

Nothing, it has helped us to filter out people who would not be a good fit. It’s something I’m very proud of.

      > 3. What is your favorite type of kinship event/activity? Why?

Questing and chatting with our kinnies. I miss our social events, but I will continue to run the random Tough Chicks and TTHTI events. Watch this space! ;)

      > 4. What should I, average kinnie, expect from your reign?

An IRON FIST! loljk, no seriously real talk time. I’m a hands off leader, I don’t want to be overbearing. I consider the leadership role as a stewardship, I will continue to shepherd our kinnies, but more importantly I will keep the flame of what we once were alive.

The Eagles may wane, but our history will never fade.

Well, not while we still pay the hosting bills!

Sorry I couldn’t end on such a sad note, I had to add a little humour ;)

      Awesome questions Aglar!

      1. I’d move the new joiners and events kin mails to the forum. I’d probably put teasers (for events) into the message of the day. Doing this would work two fold, keep kinnies’ mail boxes tidier and also draw more people into our forums.

      2. My go to event is “Taking the Hobbits to Isengard”. No pre-reqs, everyone can get involved.

      3. I’d require mandatory two weeks of kin chest duty for every Eagle. I would use it as a way to lure people into joining the officer corps.
