      QUICK UPDATE

The polls were supposed to open today, but the polling software we use on the website is allowing non-logged users to vote. (You might think that’s ok, but it would mean that anyone could vote, and as many times as they liked by using anonymous browsing. It would mean we couldn’t trust that it was really a democratic vote.)
I need to get help from the developer of the polling software, so I’m afraid the polling booth will be closed for a little while longer.

      I’m sorry!

All hail Queen Sere, for saving the day. The rest of you lazy hobbits will have your pies rationed.

Sere’s scary screenshot will live on our homepage until the next screenshot competition (when it will be relocated to the screenshot gallery.)

      Thank you Sere!

      To answer Mirv’s question:
I think we should step up our LFF events. These were advertised on the Regional channel. I think we need more people doing them, in different areas of Middle Earth. Luri and I will plan to do a few at different levels.

The Eagles, once upon a time, grew organically by having solo players join us on a tricky quest. I’d like to encourage that by having groups of Eagles playing together where the quests are tough to do on your own.

To respond to Z’s suggestion of putting events out on World: the Eagles have always avoided the World channel. We’ve consistently voted against advertising the kinship on World, and I think we’d need to have some guidelines before using World to invite other players to our events. I wouldn’t want our own members to feel uncomfortable should an event have more strangers than Eagles, for instance, and I certainly wouldn’t want to hear of trash talk in the World channel. I’m not saying I’m against it on principle, though, I’m saying it needs thinking through, that’s all.

      Hail Eagles and well met!

I’m Saed and I’m standing for officer.

I’ve been an officer in the Eagles for most of the past 4 years. I run this here website and forum and I’ve helped shape the guidelines, code of conduct and ethos of the Eagles. I think I know the kinship pretty well.

Over the past couple of years it’s become clear that we have fewer active players these days. My main concern is to increase the number of players online at any one time. I think there are two ways to achieve this:
      – recruit more players
      – have events which people will want to join in

We’ve tried both of those things in the past year (or longer) and we’ve not been all that successful. People don’t turn up to events that are scheduled and in the calendar. And given that this is a fairly old game, there are not that many new players for us to recruit.

I don’t have an easy answer, but I think we should be trying to tackle the deficit of active players in order to keep the kinship lively and healthy. We should continue our LFF events (like mine and Luri’s Trawling the Trollshaws) and continue to run both scheduled and ad hoc events.

      To answer Aglar’s questions:

      1. I think I’ve covered that one!
      2. I like our CoC. I think we should soften our stance on swearing, as there’s a profanity filter available to anyone who might be offended, but that’s a minor thing.
      3. I’ve been enjoying “guided” raids. We’ve done a lot of featured instances with someone who knows the instance really well and can help the rest of us learn where to stand, what to do, what not to do, etc. More of this please!
      4. An immaculate website ;)

      Hail Eagles!

I joined LotRO as part of the Coursera course that both Luri and Neem have mentioned. I was part of the first ever Council for the Eagles, when we realised that we needed some people helping to run this thing. I’ve been a Council Officer and the Leader of the Eagles since. I took time out this past year for personal reasons, but I’m back, and ready to rock and roll.

Since my Day Job™ involves designing and building websites, I took it upon myself to be the Eagles’ Web Elf. And here I still am, sweeping away cobwebs and gremlins and giving the machinery the odd drop of oil. (For the newer Eagles: Luri and I jointly look after this website and my company officially owns the domain and pays all the bills.)

If I get elected I’d hope to carry on my behind-the-scenes role of course, but I’m also interested in working with other officers and the kinship as a whole to find out what we need to do to improve the kinship experience.

I feel, like Luri said above and I think it’s borne out somewhat in other nominees’ pitches, that we’ve evolved into distinct groups of players. There are the endgamers, the serious raiders, the leisurely levellers, the lore buffs, the completionists. Over successive Councils we’ve tried different strategies to make the Eagles work for everyone. Given that both serious raiders and leisurely players have moved to other kinships I think it’s clear that we still haven’t got the balance right.

As others have also alluded to, I think a fresh intake would benefit the Eagles. Some timezones are flagging and could do with more players online to play together. So the more officers able to recruit, the better.

I don’t have the answers, but I would like to help find them, and implement whatever is needed to improve the experience of all Eagles, regardless of playing style, in-game aims and timezones.

If you vote for me you get a seasoned officer, with years of experience of helping to run the kinship.

      Thank you for your time.

Tell me about it. I have managed hundreds of websites over the years and the Eagles’ site is the absolute worst for random DDoS attacks, script kiddies, adult content spam. Ugh. But, slipping back into character: one day the site may fall. But today is not that day.

Thanks Sere. Looks like a lot of us have had that same message. I got it and a couple of others (hi Nida! hi Kali!) did too.

Really sorry folks. Just delete the email and the message here on your forum message list. Hopefully the new spam-protection I’ve enabled will stop any more coming through.

I don’t know if it’s a clue or a red herring, but the task boards in the homesteads go up to 110… I reckon that’s a signal of imminent level cap increase.

      1. I’m going to be controversial here. I’d like to lower the cursing threshold. We have a ‘no swearing in kin chat’ rule. But there’s also a profanity filter you can enable in your options. I think we should be a little more relaxed about what people can say so we don’t end up all piling onto someone for a minor swear word. (This in no way means we should lower our standards regarding the use of hate speech in kinship chat. That’s still not allowed no way never.)

      2. I’d probably go for the Saed & Luri standard trio: Trouble in Tuckborough, Storm on Methedras, Thievery and Mischief. Just challenging enough, scale up to full raid, good for no-stress runs. You can try out new skills, practise FMs, swap to the trait tree you mostly don’t use, etc. and I like that. No pressure, good practice opportunities, and you get a bunch of marks at the end.

      3. Oh, massive guilt trip. I was supposed to help with this and it’s complicated and time-consuming and I always forget. Maybe we should think of an easier way to manage it? Maybe we should share the workload? Everyone takes it in turns to do a bit of a tidy, or we implement an ‘if you take something, sort something’ rule.

I’m sure I speak for everyone when I say that we appreciate that you want to give back to the kin after the kin helped you settle in. I’m excited already to see the new council breathe new life into the Eagles.

Great to see your commitment to Sparkle Motion, Alaron. I hope you do find your magic wand ;) I think you’re right that some raiding training would be helpful within the kin.
